Athippatta Mana Nagakanya Temple

The Athippatta Mana Nagakanyaka Temple (Athippatta Kavu) is a historically renowned center for serpent worship located at Chethallur in Palakkad district. Dating back over 800 years, this *Mana* (traditional Namboodiri ancestral home) and its sacred grove (*Kavu*) are owned by a prominent Namboodiri family of Valluvanad.
Legend
Legend has it that centuries ago, a patriarch (karanavar) of the Athippatta Mana went to the Vaikom Temple to observe Bhajan (devotional vigil). When he was returning after his journey, the divine presence (chaitanyam) of Vaikkathappan accompanied him in the form of a serpent inside his palm-leaf umbrella. This divine presence first appeared in the courtyard of the Mana in the form of a golden serpent and later transformed into an anthill. The principal worship takes place at this very anthill.
Deities and Significance
  • Main Deity: The primary deity worshipped here is the serpent god in the concept of Ardhanariswara (half-male, half-female form).

  • Other Deities: In addition to the serpent deities, goddesses and gods such as Durga, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, and Bhadrakali—who were originally in the sanctum sanctorum of the Mana—are also enshrined and worshipped here.

  • Nature-rich Sacred Grove (Kavu): A large serpent grove (Sarpakkavu) spanning approximately one acre is situated near this Mana. Immersed in nature, this grove features an over 500-year-old Anjili tree along with rare flora, fauna, and birds.

  • Major Festivals:

  • ThaiPooyam: ThaiPooyam, occurring in the Malayalam month of Makaram, is the most important festival here. On this day, a large number of devotees gather here for serpent curse remediation (sarppadosha nivaranam) and prayers.

  • Temple Information:

  • Location: Chethalloor, Palakkad district (situated on the banks of the Thootapuzha river).

  • Special Feature: The ten rooms of this Mana and their intricate woodwork are exceptionally remarkable in terms of traditional architecture (vastuvidya).
